Math and English are very important subjects in high school. Particularly, a good math grade will open up opportunities for students to enroll in exciting university programs in business, sciences, and engineering. About 85% of all university programs require students to be sound in math.
The most significant concern when it comes to learning math is that it is progressive. Ideally, each grade level follows from the previous one, which also builds on the one before it. Without a strong knowledge of past math concepts, students will likely struggle when they meet with new ones. For instance, math tests often check for understanding of previous math concepts as seen in the steps involved in solving the questions asked.

Students are supposed to begin building their math foundational skills in Grade 7 and 8, where they will be taught concepts such as integers and fractions, and later they learn graphing, algebra, and more complex manipulations in high school. Unless they're grounded in these skills, most students will have issues studying math every year. To address this situation, we use in-depth step-by-step explanations and lots of practice questions to strengthen their understanding of fundamental math concepts.
Word problem is an integral part of a typical math lesson and is always a challenge to most students. The issue lies particularly in interpreting worded problems into equations and variables. In teaching word problems, the best strategy is to have the students understand different word problem scenarios within any topic, such that they're able to identify and isolate the key elements, such as the variables and equations.
From Grade 10 upwards, math typically takes a more complex turn. Students are faced with more challenging math concepts involving many parts. Usually, the challenge is knowing when to use the right equation.
One strategy at QEA is to show the students the “big picture,” instead of plunging straight into the technical stuff. Once a student is able to understand the “big picture”, — why each part exists and how all the parts relate to each other — they truly appreciate and understand these concepts. From this point on, applying these concepts in solving equations is easier.

Grade 9 and 10 math marks a significant departure from elementary school math, especially for students who scored 75% or lower. Many new math concepts like linear equations, quadratics, and geometry are introduced.
In order to easily handle common challenges like quantitative thinking and word problems in Grade 9 and 10, students need to strengthen their foundational skills. This is especially important if they have gaps in their Grade 8 and 9 learning. Typically, these gaps can be in integers, fractions, and linear equations. To excel in Grade 11 math, students must be grounded in Grade 9 and 10 math.
Grade 11 Math is a vital stepping stone toward Grade 12th math. At this stage in math, many students find themselves at crossroads. For instance, some wonder which to pick between the Mixed level math course and the Academic level math course. At this point, we often advise the students to stick with the Grade 11 Academic Math, as it opens the door to a diverse range of exciting university programs. The challenge though is that it requires a bit more work on the part of the students. However, if a student is absolutely certain of the path they wish to take after high school, we encourage them with the support they need. Otherwise, sticking to a more flexible math option is advised.
The challenging units in Grade 11 Math are numerous. They typically include exponents, transformation, trigonometry graphing, and trigonometry identities (which is usually the first time they'll encounter proofs).
The simpler units like quadratics and algebra are mostly a review of Grade 10 material, including series and sequences.
Advanced Functions is an essential prerequisite for most university programs, hence it is very important in high school. Students build more on the skills learned in the Grade 11 course: factoring, graphing, trigonometry, and exponents. The interesting about Advanced Functions is that students will likely have varying levels of proficiency when taking the course. They`ll find some units like polynomial functions, and others like trigonometry and proofs harder. Because of this experience, many students describe Advanced Functions as a rollercoaster ride of a course.
Calculus includes two different sections: Derivative and Vector Calculus. Derivative Calculus extends from work in Advanced Functions, while Vector Calculus is completely new. Vector Calculus bears some resemblance to Physics when it comes to problem-solving. The Calculus derivative section branches out from the work done in Advanced Functions and typically includes algebra, graphing, trigonometry, and logarithms. The vector section, which is entirely new, involves 3D equations of lines and planes. Like Derivative Vector, the problem-solving aspects of Vector Calculus are similar to physics. Many students find this component of the course particularly difficult.
In order to succeed in Vector Calculus, make sure you are proficient in exponents, factoring, combining rational expressions such as fractions with algebra, and solving equations.
Make sure to pay special attention to the Optimization Unit in Calculus, which includes many word problems. If you struggle with word problems, make sure to prepare for this Calculus unit in particular. As always, make sure to keep your notes organized. Identify the different kinds of Calculus problems. This will help you to clarify the Calculus concepts in this course significantly, and also help to keep track of your progress.
